Arabia
The peninsula where Islam began, and the sultan who ruled Egypt and Syria.
Saladin died on 4 March 1193 after founding the Ayyubid realm. Civ6 names a Sultan persona in the Leader Pass and leaves the launch portrait unnamed.
Origins and formation
The history of the modern Saudi state begins with the Al Saud dynasty in central Arabia in 1727. The same peninsula was already the site of older cultures, and Islam emerged there in the early seventh century. A game civilization called Arabia therefore covers more than one state. The seventh-century community around Muhammad and the eighteenth-century emirate of Diriyah are not the same polity. The lead used here keeps both facts and does not collapse them into one capital.2
Defining periods
Saladin, Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, lived from about 1137 to 4 March 1193. He founded the Ayyubid dynasty and was the first sultan of both Egypt and Syria. He was a Sunni ruler of Kurdish origin and a central figure of the Third Crusade. At his height the realm spanned Egypt, Syria, Upper Mesopotamia, the Hejaz, Yemen, and Nubia. He was sent to Fatimid Egypt in 1164 with his uncle Shirkuh. That career is Levantine and Egyptian. It is not the founding of the Saudi emirate in 1727, and it is not the Abbasid revolution of 750, when a dynasty descended from Muhammad’s uncle Abbas overthrew the Umayyads and ruled from Iraq, with Baghdad as capital for most of that history.1 2 3
Leaders
The Leader Pass Great Negotiators Pack includes Sultan Saladin of Arabia. The English page and the Simplified Chinese page both use that title, Sultan, which marks the portrait as a new take on an existing leader. The retrieved pages do not print a separate name for the earlier portrait. This essay uses the ordinary English name Saladin for the historical person and does not pretend the launch screen has been quoted. The Chinese essay records the standard reading of that name and says it was not copied from a localized heading on these pages.4 5
A negotiator pack is a sales bundle with Lincoln and Nzinga beside him. Those people are not his contemporaries. The Sultan title on the page is a persona label. It matches the historical office he held. It does not by itself narrate 1164 or 1193.1 4
Legacy and interpretation
Saladin’s legacy in this lead is the Ayyubid realm and the war against the Crusader states. Arabia’s longer legacy on the other page is the birthplace of Islam and, much later, the Saudi state. The game can put one sultan on a civilization named for the peninsula. That choice should not be read as a claim that he founded Mecca or that the Abbasid caliphs were Ayyubid sultans. The published Civilization VII Abbasid essay, where it exists, is a different dynasty and is not linked here as if it were this sultan’s state.1 3
A closer look
The pages retrieved here do not spell a numeric ability for the Sultan persona. This essay does not borrow one from memory. What they do state is the pack name and the parenthetical Arabia. A parenthetical is a roster assignment. It is not a map of the Hejaz.4 5
In Civilization VI
The civilization’s pack stays unconfirmed. The Sultan persona is Leader Pass. Keep the seventh-century origin of Islam, the Abbasid revolution of 750, Saladin’s mission of 1164, his death on 4 March 1193, and the Saudi emirate of 1727 on separate lines.1 2 3 4
