Poland
A kingdom from 1025 to 1795, and Jadwiga, crowned king in 1384.
Jadwiga reigned from 16 October 1384 until 17 July 1399. The kingdom runs from 1025 to 1795. The hub places Poland in a scenario pack.
Origins and formation
The Kingdom of Poland was a state in Central Europe from 1025 until 1795. The West Slavic Polans, in what is now Greater Poland, gave rise to a state in the early 10th century. After the Christianization of 966 and the duchy under Mieszko I, his son Boleslaw I the Brave was crowned the first king in 1025 at Gniezno Cathedral. That coronation is the kingdom’s start in this lead. It is not Jadwiga’s accession.2
Defining periods
Jadwiga, also Hedwig, was born in 1373 or 1374 and died on 17 July 1399. She was queen of Poland and its last hereditary ruler. She was crowned king, in the Latin formula of the lead, to mark her status as sovereign, and she reigned from 16 October 1384 until her death. She was born in Buda, the youngest daughter of Louis I of Hungary and Elizabeth of Bosnia, of the Capetian House of Anjou, with Piast forebears. In 1378 she was symbolically married to William of Austria and lived in Vienna until 1380. The lead used here breaks off before the later union. This essay does not invent that missing chapter. No Civilization VII essay covers Poland, so none is linked.1
Leaders
The English hub and the Chinese hub both list a Poland Civilization and Scenario Pack. That sentence names the civilization and the pack. It does not name Jadwiga. The Chinese update notes head a balance block with the ordinary name for Poland and discuss a Lithuanian union and a culture bomb. They do not print her name. The Chinese form in this essay is the standard reading. Her pack is the scenario pack, because the hub assigns the civilization there and the retrieved pages do not add a second Polish leader.3 4 5
The title king, for a woman, is a medieval choice of words in the biography. A game leader slot is a portrait. The title explains the coronation formula. It does not describe a unique unit.1
Legacy and interpretation
The kingdom’s legacy in this lead is a state from the Piast coronation of 1025 to 1795. Jadwiga’s legacy is a short reign, 1384 to 1399, and a coronation that calls a queen a king. The Lithuanian union in the update notes is a game sentence. It is not, by itself, the history of a later union, and this essay does not supply a year the notes omit.1 2 5
A closer look
The update’s Poland lines change what a culture bomb does to religion. They are balance numbers. This essay does not copy them. A culture bomb is not the coronation of 16 October 1384.5
In Civilization VI
The civilization is the scenario pack named on the hub. Jadwiga’s Chinese name is a standard reading. Keep 966, the coronation of 1025, her reign from 1384, her death on 17 July 1399, and the kingdom’s end in 1795 apart.1 2 3
