Germany
East Francia's heir, and the emperor who drowned in 1190.
Frederick Barbarossa was elected King of Germany in 1152 and died on 10 June 1190. Civ6 names Ludwig II and splits Germany from Bavaria.
Origins and formation
The idea of Germany as a distinct region is traced to Julius Caesar, who called the land east of the Rhine Germania, the land where the Germani lived. Germanic tribes kept the Roman Empire from annexing that interior, though the provinces of Germania Superior and Inferior were set along the Rhine. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Franks conquered the other West Germanic peoples. When the Frankish empire was divided in 843, the eastern part became East Francia and later the kingdom of Germany. A game slot called Germany therefore starts as a Roman name for other people’s land. It is not yet Barbarossa’s empire.1
Defining periods
Frederick Barbarossa was born in December 1122 and died on 10 June 1190. He was Holy Roman Emperor from 1155 until his death. He was elected King of Germany at Frankfurt on 4 March 1152 and crowned at Aachen on 9 March. He was crowned King of Italy at Pavia on 24 April 1155 and emperor by Pope Adrian IV at Rome on 18 June 1155. Two years later the word holy was attached to his empire in a document. He was later crowned King of Burgundy at Arles. Those crowns are twelfth-century offices. They are not the division of 843, and they are not a modern national state.1 2
Leaders
The Leader Pass Great Builders Pack includes Ludwig II. The English page puts him in parentheses as Germany. The Simplified Chinese Leader Pass page puts him in Bavaria. The console announcement in Chinese puts him in Germany again. Both Chinese wordings are official. This essay does not average them into one kingdom. Ludwig is a nineteenth-century king of Bavaria in ordinary history. The pages assign him to the German civilization. That assignment is a game fact. It does not move his palaces into the twelfth century.3 4 5
The launch leader is not given an official Chinese heading on these pages. The Chinese essay uses the standard reading of Frederick Barbarossa and says so. The English name is the one on the historical page used here, which is also the usual game name. The retrieved 2K pages do not print it in the Leader Pass list, because that list is the new leader, not the classic one.2 3
Legacy and interpretation
Germany’s legacy in the opening lead is East Francia becoming a kingdom. Barbarossa’s legacy is a set of crowns and a death in 1190 during the Third Crusade, which this lead dates without narrating the drowning in detail beyond the day. Ludwig’s legacy, if read from outside the game, is Bavarian. The game file places him on Germany. The published Civilization VII Prussia essay is a different state and is not linked as if it were this empire.1 2
A closer look
No numeric ability for Ludwig is copied here. The official sentence is the pack and the parenthetical country. A builders pack groups him with Theodora and Sejong. Those rulers are not his ministers. The footnote says Sejong requires Rise and Fall and Theodora requires the New Frontier Pass. Ludwig’s own line, as retrieved, does not add that extra requirement.3 4
In Civilization VI
The civilization’s pack stays unconfirmed. Ludwig is Leader Pass. Keep Caesar’s Germania, the division of 843, the election of 4 March 1152, the imperial coronation of 18 June 1155, and the death on 10 June 1190 apart from a nineteenth-century king.1 2 3
