Korea
A peninsula of several kingdoms, with Seondeok of Silla and Sejong of Joseon in one game slot.
Seondeok ruled Silla from 632 to 647. Sejong ruled Joseon from 1418 to 1450. Civ6 names both, and only Sejong's pack is stated.
Origins and formation
The Lower Paleolithic on the Korean peninsula and in Manchuria begins roughly half a million years ago. The earliest known Korean pottery is about 8000 BC. The Neolithic follows, then a Bronze Age by 2000 BC and an Iron Age around 700 BC. The Paleolithic people are likely not the direct ancestors of present Koreans. The lead says those ancestors are thought to be the Neolithic people of about 2000 BC. A game civilization named Korea is already a selection among later kingdoms. It is not the pottery.1
Defining periods
Queen Seondeok reigned as queen regnant of Silla, one of the Three Kingdoms, from 632 to 647. She was Silla’s twenty-seventh ruler and its first reigning queen. She died on 20 February 647, which the biography also gives as 17 February in the old calendar. The Samguk sagi describes her as generous, benevolent, wise, and smart. Sejong, born 15 May 1397 and dead on 8 April 1450, was the fourth monarch of Joseon and ruled from 1418 until his death. He is remembered especially for Hangul. He was the third son of the future King Taejong. Eight centuries separate the Silla queen from the Joseon king. The published Civilization VII essays keep Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon apart. This Civ6 page is the slot that puts two of those reigns on one name.1 2 3
Leaders
The Leader Pass names Sejong of Korea in the Great Builders Pack and says he requires Rise and Fall. The Chinese Leader Pass page prints his name beside one spelling of the civilization. The Chinese update notes head the same balance block with a different spelling, next to an academy district and an ability. They do not print Sejong or Seondeok. The brackets on that block name both Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm as rulesets for the change. They are not a sentence that says which pack adds the civilization, so the civilization’s pack stays unconfirmed. Seondeok’s Chinese name in this essay is the standard reading.4 5
Sejong’s creation of Hangul is a fifteenth-century fact. A Leader Pass requirement is a sales rule. Rise and Fall is not the year 1418.2 4
Legacy and interpretation
Korea’s legacy in the long lead is a sequence of ages and then historic kingdoms. Seondeok’s legacy is Silla’s first reigning queen. Sejong’s is Joseon and the alphabet. The Civ7 Silla essay is her kingdom. The Goryeo essay is the state between Silla and Joseon. The Joseon essay is Sejong’s dynasty, and the published Yi Sun-sin essay is a later war, not 1418. This page points to those three civilization essays instead of merging them.2 3
A closer look
The update notes’ lines for this civilization change yields around an academy district. This essay does not copy the amounts. A changed number is not Hangul, and it is not the reign of 632. The two Chinese spellings stay a naming conflict, not two kingdoms.5
In Civilization VI
The civilization’s pack stays unconfirmed. Sejong is Leader Pass and needs Rise and Fall. Seondeok’s pack is unconfirmed. The Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon essays are the Civilization VII counterparts. Keep 632, 647, 1418, and 1450 apart.2 3 4
