Origins and formation

The history of China runs across millennia and a wide geography. Civilization in the Yellow and Yangtze basins became one of the oldest. Traditional historiography reads that past as a dynastic cycle. The earliest confirmed historical period in this lead is the Shang, from about 1250 BC, which left the oldest surviving oracle bones. The Zhou, from about 1046 to 256 BC, introduced the Mandate of Heaven and the setting for Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism. One game slot called China is a label for that whole cycle. It is not one reign.1

Defining periods

Qin Shi Huang, born in 259 BC and dead on 12 July 210 BC, was the founder of the Qin dynasty and the first emperor. By 221 BC he had conquered the other warring states and unified China. He invented the title huangdi rather than reuse the word for king. Wu Zetian, 17 February 624 to 16 December 705, is the only undisputed female sovereign in this lead. She ruled her own Zhou dynasty from 690 to 705 after years as empress and dowager of the Tang. Yongle is the reign title of the Ming emperor Zhu Di. These three lives sit in three dynasties. The game can put all of them on one civilization. The centuries between them do not disappear.1 2 3

Leaders

The Leader Pass Rulers of China Pack names Yongle, Qin Shi Huang the Unifier, and Wu Zetian. Calling one portrait “the Unifier” presents it as a new take on a classic leader. The retrieved pages do not print a separate name for the earlier portrait. This essay does not invent one. Kublai Khan is named on the Vietnam pack as an alternate leader of China or of Mongolia. Playing him as Mongolia requires Rise and Fall. The China option is stated on that page without that extra sentence.4 5

Wu Zetian’s biography is a Tang and Zhou story of examinations and a court that moved power away from old aristocratic clans. The Chinese Leader Pass page says she dislikes nearby armies and settlements that are not hers. That is a game agenda. It is not the examination system. Yongle’s page says he likes civilizations with a positive income and dislikes a negative one. A treasury preference is not the tribute voyages.3 4

Legacy and interpretation

The published Civilization VII essays split this history into Han, Ming, and Qing. Those are three ages of one tradition, not three spellings of Qin. This Civ6 page keeps the single slot the game uses, and it points to those three essays instead of pretending one leader can stand for all three dynasties. Kublai is a step further: he is also a Mongol ruler on the same pack page. China and Mongolia remain two civilizations.1 5

A closer look

The unifier’s described ability turns barbarian units. The historical Qin emperor is remembered for conquest, standard measures, and the tomb army. Recruiting barbarians in a game is a rule. It is not the campaign of 221 BC. Yields and the exact conversion stay on the guide.2 4

In Civilization VI

The civilization’s pack stays unconfirmed. Yongle, Wu Zetian, and the unifier Qin are Leader Pass. Kublai is New Frontier Pass. The Han, Ming, and Qing essays in the Civilization VII codex are the counterparts. Keep Shang, 221 BC, Wu Zetian’s Zhou of 690 to 705, and the Ming reign title Yongle apart.1 3 4 5
