England
The kingdom from 927 to 1 May 1707, with more than one queen in the game.
The Kingdom of England ran from 927 to 1 May 1707. Civ6 names Elizabeth I, steam-age Victoria, and Eleanor too.
Origins and formation
The Kingdom of England was a sovereign state on the island of Great Britain from 927, when Athelstan united the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, until 1 May 1707, when it and Scotland formed the Kingdom of Great Britain. Unification took decades. Alfred had taken London in 886 and styled himself king of the Anglo-Saxons. The kingdom that ends in 1707 is not the British Empire and not the Norman landing by itself. The published Civilization VII England essay is this same kingdom. This page is the Civ6 roster attached to that history.1
Defining periods
Histories after 1066 usually divide the kingdom by dynasty: Norman and Angevin, then Plantagenet, then Tudor and later houses, until the union. Elizabeth I, already published in the Civilization VII codex, reigned from 1558 to 1603 inside that kingdom. Victoria’s long reign sits after 1707, in the state the union created, which is why a steam-age persona and a medieval kingdom can share a name in a game and still be different centuries. This essay does not retell the Armada or the industrial age. It keeps the kingdom’s dates fixed.1
Leaders
The Leader Pass Rulers of England Pack includes Elizabeth I, Varangian Harald Hardrada, and Victoria, Age of Steam. Harald is assigned to Norway on that page, not to England. Elizabeth and both Victorias are England. The Chinese Leader Pass page uses one spelling of the country’s name. The Chinese update notes use another, in a line about redcoat infantry and in the sentence that names Eleanor. This essay records the conflict and uses the Leader Pass spelling in the Chinese title, which matches the Civ7 essay. The English name on both official languages’ hubs for the pack is England.2 3 4 5
Eleanor is named as a leader of England and of France. The update does not state her pack. The steam-age Victoria is explicitly a new take, so a classic Victoria already existed. Her Chinese name in this essay is the standard reading, because the retrieved pages name the steam-age persona and do not reprint the classic heading.3 4 5
Legacy and interpretation
The kingdom’s legacy is a state from 927 to 1707. The game’s England also carries Elizabeth, a later Victoria, and a queen who can lead France. Those are roster facts. They do not make 927, 1558, and the nineteenth century one reign. The published Civ7 essay stops at the union and points onward to Great Britain. This page points back to that essay rather than repeating it.1
A closer look
The Varangian persona sits in the England pack’s marketing list and is parenthetically Norway. A pack named for England can still contain a Norwegian persona. That is a bundle. It is not a claim that Harald was king of England, though the historical Harald did fight for that crown in 1066. This essay does not add that campaign from a page that does not describe it.2 3
In Civilization VI
The civilization’s pack stays unconfirmed. Elizabeth and steam-age Victoria are Leader Pass. Eleanor’s pack is unconfirmed. The published Civilization VII England essay is the counterpart. Keep 927, 1066, Elizabeth’s reign, and 1 May 1707 apart from a steam-age persona.1 2 4
