Netherlands
The republic of 1588 to 1795, and the queen who reigned from 1890 to 1948.
The Dutch Republic lasted from 1588 to 1795. Wilhelmina was queen from 1890 to 1948. Civ6 leaves both the civilization and her pack unconfirmed.
Origins and formation
The Dutch Republic was also called the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. It was a confederation of those provinces from 1588 until the Batavian Revolution in 1795. It was established after seven provinces in the Spanish Netherlands revolted and formed a mutual alliance. The republic is not the twentieth-century kingdom. A game leader born in 1880 cannot found the state of 1588.1
Defining periods
Wilhelmina was born on 31 August 1880 and died on 28 November 1962. She was queen from 1890 until she abdicated in 1948, nearly fifty-eight years, the longest reign in Dutch history. Her years include the First World War, the economic crisis of 1933, and the Second World War. She was the child of William III and Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont. The abdication is 1948. The republic had already ended in 1795. The published Civilization VII pages do not have a Netherlands essay, so none is linked. Spain’s Philip II, in the Civ6 essay already published here, was lord of the Seventeen Provinces from 1555. That is the rule the revolt left. It is not Wilhelmina’s reign.1 2
Leaders
The Chinese update notes head a block with the ordinary Chinese name. The block changes loyalty from domestic trade routes and culture from routes that start or end in another civilization. They do not name Wilhelmina. Unlike several blocks beside it, this one has no expansion bracket. That absence is not a sentence assigning the civilization to the base game, so her pack stays unconfirmed. The Chinese form of her personal name in this essay is the standard reading. No second Dutch leader appears on the Leader Pass pages retrieved here.3 4
Legacy and interpretation
The republic’s legacy in this lead is the confederation of seven provinces that ends with the Batavian Revolution in 1795. Wilhelmina’s full name was Wilhelmina Helena Pauline Maria. Her legacy is a long modern reign through two world wars and an abdication. The accession of 1890 and the death on 28 November 1962 are not the same event. The crown and the republic are not one story. Putting her face on a civilization that players may associate with the seventeenth-century republic joins a queen to a state that ended before she was born. The dates above are the reason to keep those two stories apart.1 2
A closer look
The update’s Netherlands lines change culture from foreign trade routes and loyalty from domestic ones. They are balance numbers. This essay does not copy them. A trade-route bonus is not the alliance of 1588 and not the abdication of 1948.3
In Civilization VI
The pack stays unconfirmed. Keep 1588, 1795, the accession of 1890, and the abdication of 1948 apart, and do not treat the standard reading of her name as a quotation from the 2K pages used here.1 2 3
