Origins and formation

The Roman Republic is the era of classical Roman civilization that begins with the overthrow of the kingdom, traditionally dated to 509 BC, and ends in 27 BC with the establishment of the empire after the War of Actium. During that span, Rome’s control grew from the city’s surroundings to hegemony over the Mediterranean. The society mixed Latin and Etruscan communities with Sabine, Oscan, and Greek elements, visible in the religion and its pantheon. A single civilization entry has to hold both the city and that later hegemony. They are not the same scale.1

Defining periods

The political organization of the republic developed inside that expansion. The lead used here does not narrate every magistracy. What it does fix is the frame: kingdom, then republic, then empire in 27 BC. Julius Caesar sits at the end of the republic, not at its traditional start. He was dictator almost continuously from 49 BC until his assassination on 15 March 44 BC. In 60 BC he had formed the First Triumvirate with Crassus and Pompey. He led the Gallic Wars and defeated Pompey in the civil war. In 44 BC he was titled dictator in perpetuity. Those offices created the conditions for the republic’s collapse. They are not the founding of 509 BC.1 2

Leaders

The official English hub says the base game has 20 leaders and does not list their names. The Simplified Chinese hub says the same count. Neither page, on the text retrieved here, names a launch leader for Rome. This essay does not supply that missing name from memory.3 4

The same hubs do name Julius Caesar. Linking a 2K account to the platform used to play Civilization VI adds him to the leader roster and unlocks a cosmetic scout skin. The account is free. The Chinese hub and the later update notes do not spell his Chinese name the same way. This English essay does not pick a spelling. The Chinese essay records both. Caesar’s life, on the biography, runs from 12 or 13 July 100 BC to 15 March 44 BC. A free unlock is a distribution rule. It is not the Gallic Wars, and it is not the assassination.2 3 4 5

Legacy and interpretation

The republic’s legacy on the history page is a Mediterranean hegemony and a political form that ends in 27 BC. Caesar’s legacy is the dictatorship that helped end that form. The published Civilization VII essay is that longer Roman story, including the empire. This page does not replace it. A game that offers one Rome has to choose a face. The retrieved pages name Caesar and leave the launch face unlisted.1 2

A closer look

The update notes discuss Roman units in a balance pass, including the legion among units that upgrade toward a later swordsman. That note identifies a unit with Rome. It still does not name the launch leader, and it does not say the civilization was sold as a separate pack. A unit line is not a biography of Caesar.5

In Civilization VI

The civilization’s pack is left unconfirmed because the hub counts 20 base leaders without naming Rome among them, and no retrieved pack page assigns Rome to Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, or a scenario pack. Caesar is the exception: the hub states the free account unlock. The published Civilization VII Rome essay is the counterpart to read beside this one. Keep 509 BC, Caesar’s dictatorship from 49 BC, 15 March 44 BC, and 27 BC on separate lines.1 2 3
