Origins and formation

Macedonia, also called Macedon, was an ancient kingdom on the periphery of Archaic and Classical Greece, and later the dominant state of Hellenistic Greece. The Argead dynasty founded and first ruled it, followed by the Antipatrid and Antigonid dynasties. The early kingdom centered on the northeastern Greek peninsula, around Aegae, and bordered Epirus, Illyria, Paeonia, Thrace, and Thessaly. Before the 4th century BC it was a small kingdom, outside the area dominated by Athens, Sparta, and Thebes, and briefly subordinate to the Achaemenid Empire. Alexander’s reign is not that whole dynasty list.2

Defining periods

Alexander III of Macedon lived from 20 or 21 July 356 BC to 10 or 11 June 323 BC. He was king from 336 BC until his death. He was the son of Philip II and Olympias, Philip’s fourth wife, and he took the throne at 20 after Philip was assassinated. He was born in Pella and tutored by Aristotle until 16. Most of the reign was a campaign through Asia and Egypt. By 30 he had an empire from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle. The published Civilization VII Greece essay is the neighboring classical world. It is not this kingdom, so it is not linked as the same civilization. The published Alexander essay is this king. The Persia essay in this codex is the other half of the same scenario pack, not Alexander’s realm.1

Leaders

The hubs list a Persia and Macedon Civilization and Scenario Pack. The Chinese update notes use a different word for “scenario” when they tag the hypaspist and the immortal. This essay records both words and does not treat them as two packs. The notes name a Macedonian unit. They do not print Alexander. His Chinese name in this essay is the standard reading. His pack is the scenario pack, because the hub assigns the civilization there and the retrieved pages do not add a second Macedonian leader.3 4 5

Legacy and interpretation

The kingdom’s legacy in the lead is an Argead state that later becomes Hellenistic Greece’s dominant power. Alexander’s legacy is the reign from 336 to 323 BC and an undefeated campaign. Philip’s assassination is the start of that reign, not the founding of the Argeads. Reading Alexander as Athens, or as the Achaemenid king he fought, joins states the leads keep apart.1 2

A closer look

The update’s Macedon line changes a unit’s strength and tags the pack with the alternate Chinese word. It is a balance number. This essay does not copy it. A changed unit is not the assassination of Philip and not 323 BC.5

In Civilization VI

The civilization is the scenario pack named on the hub, shared with Persia. Alexander’s Chinese name is a standard reading. Keep the early Argead kingdom, Philip, the accession of 336 BC, and the death on 10 or 11 June 323 BC apart.1 2 3
