Russia

From the Rus of 862 to the emperor who took that title in 1721.

Peter I ruled from 1682 and was emperor from 1721 until 1725. Civ6 names the civilization in Chinese and leaves the classic leader's pack unconfirmed.

Origins and formation

The history of Russia begins with the East Slavs. The traditional start of specifically Russian history is the Rus state in the north in 862, ruled by Varangians. In 882 Prince Oleg of Novgorod seized Kiev, joined the northern and southern lands, and by the end of the tenth century the center of rule sat at Kiev, with the two parts keeping real autonomy. The state took Christianity from the Byzantine Empire. A game leader who founds a navy in the eighteenth century is not that ninth-century prince. The civilization name covers both.1

Defining periods

Peter I was born on 9 June 1672 and died on 8 February 1725. He was tsar of all Russia from 1682 and the first emperor from 1721 until his death. He reigned with his brother Ivan V from 1682 until Ivan died in 1696. Much of the reign was war against the Ottoman and Swedish empires. The Azov campaigns were followed by a Russian navy. After the Great Northern War, Russia annexed a large part of the eastern Baltic coast. Those are Petrine facts. They sit long after 862 and 882. The joint reign with Ivan is not a second dynasty, and the imperial title of 1721 is not the Kiev of 882. The published Civilization VII Russia essay includes Catherine and the later empire. This page uses Peter as the classic face and does not replace her article.1 2

Leaders

The Chinese update notes head a balance block with the ordinary Chinese name for Russia and discuss the motherland ability and free tiles in new cities. They do not name Peter. The hub’s list of 20 base leaders does not itemize him either. His pack stays unconfirmed. The Chinese essay uses the standard reading of his name and says the retrieved pages did not print it. No Leader Pass entry retrieved here adds a second Russian persona.3 4

Legacy and interpretation

Russia’s legacy in the opening lead is a northern Rus state that takes Kiev and Byzantine Christianity. Peter’s legacy is the imperial title of 1721 and a Baltic coast taken from Sweden. The Civ7 essay carries Catherine, the Hermitage, and 1861. Reading Peter as if he signed the emancipation, or Catherine as if she founded Kiev, joins centuries the sources keep apart. This page points to that essay for the later court.1 2

A closer look

The update’s Russia lines are about yields and the number of free tiles in a new city. They are balance numbers. This essay does not copy them. A changed tile count is not the annexation of the Baltic, and it is not Oleg’s seizure of Kiev.3

In Civilization VI

The pack stays unconfirmed. The published Civilization VII Russia essay is the later counterpart. Keep 862, 882, Peter’s joint reign from 1682, the imperial title of 1721, and his death in 1725 apart.1 2 3
