Gran Colombia
A republic from 1819 to 1831, and Bolivar, who died on 17 December 1830.
Gran Colombia lasted from 1819 to 1831. Bolivar died on 17 December 1830. The Maya pack names him, and the civilization is New Frontier Pass.
Origins and formation
Gran Colombia, also called Greater Colombia and officially the Republic of Colombia, was the state that encompassed much of northern South America and parts of Central America from 1819 to 1831. It included present-day Colombia, mainland Ecuador, Panama, Venezuela, parts of northern Peru, northwestern Brazil, and a claim to the Essequibo region. The historiographical name distinguishes it from today’s Republic of Colombia, which reused the official name. A liberator’s life is not the whole map of that state.2
Defining periods
Simon Jose Antonio de la Santisima Trinidad Bolivar Palacios Ponte y Blanco lived from 24 July 1783 to 17 December 1830. He was a Venezuelan officer and statesman who led the lands that are now Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela to independence from the Spanish Empire. He is called El Libertador. He was born in Caracas, in the Captaincy General of Venezuela, into a wealthy criollo family, and he lost both parents as a child. He was educated abroad and lived in Spain. The lead breaks off there. This essay does not invent the later campaigns. No Civilization VII civilization essay covers this republic, so none is linked. The published Simón Bolívar essay is the person, not a second state.1
Leaders
The Maya and Gran Colombia Pack, one of six in the New Frontier Pass, names Simon Bolivar as the leader of Gran Colombia and Lady Six Sky as the leader of the Maya. The Chinese page uses the ordinary names for the state and for him. The update notes mention the pack by its Chinese name when they discuss an observatory. They do not add a second Gran Colombian leader. This essay does not copy movement bonuses or commander abilities. A movement rule is not 1819.3 4
Legacy and interpretation
The state’s legacy in the lead is a short republic, 1819 to 1831, whose official name later belonged to a smaller country. Bolivar’s legacy is independence across several modern states and a death in 1830, a year before the historiography ends the larger republic. Reading him as the founder of today’s Colombia alone would drop Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela from the lead.1 2
A closer look
The pack page describes fast armies and a commander gained on entering an era. Those are design sentences. This essay does not copy them. A commander is not the Captaincy General of Venezuela.3
In Civilization VI
The civilization is New Frontier Pass. Bolivar is the leader the pack names. Keep 24 July 1783, the state from 1819, his death on 17 December 1830, and the republic’s end in 1831 apart. The label Gran Colombia exists so readers do not confuse that state with the later republic that kept the official name. His death comes before that end. Caracas is his birthplace in the lead, not the whole of the claimed map in the biography lead used here.1 2 3
