Spain
Hispania's later kingdom, and Philip II, king from 1556 to 1598.
Philip II was king of Spain from 1556 until 13 September 1598. Civ6 names the civilization in Chinese and leaves his pack unconfirmed.
Origins and formation
The history of Spain begins with contact between the pre-Roman peoples of the Iberian coast and the Greeks and Phoenicians. In classical antiquity the peninsula saw successive colonization by Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans. Native peoples, including the Tartessians, mixed with the colonizers. The Romans called the whole peninsula Hispania, and the name Spain comes from that word. A game civilization that starts with a sixteenth-century king is already late in this story. The Phoenician colonies are the beginning the lead actually gives.1
Defining periods
Philip II was born on 21 May 1527 and died on 13 September 1598. He was king of Spain from 1556, king of Portugal from 1580, and king of Naples and Sicily from 1554 until his death. He was also king of England and Ireland by marriage to Mary I from 1554 until her death in 1558, and duke of Milan from 1540. From 1555 he was lord of the Seventeen Provinces. He was the son of Charles V and was born and raised in Spain. Those crowns are a personal union. They are not proof that Spain, Portugal, England, and the Netherlands were one country. The published Civilization VII Spain essay is Isabella’s monarchy, which ends in 1504, before this reign.1 2
Leaders
The retrieved 2K pages name Spain as a civilization in the Chinese update notes, in a block about the Lithuanian union and a culture bomb, and they mention Spanish conquistadors as a unit. They do not name Philip. The Chinese essay uses the standard reading of his name and says it was not copied from those pages. The English name is the historical king’s. The hub’s count of 20 base leaders does not itemize him, so his pack stays unconfirmed along with the civilization.3 4
No Leader Pass page retrieved here adds a second Spanish persona. Unlike England or France, Spain does not receive an extra official portrait in that list. One leader, unnamed on the marketing pages used here, is the whole official gap.3
Legacy and interpretation
Spain’s legacy in the opening lead is a Roman name for a peninsula that had already met Greeks and Phoenicians. Philip’s legacy is a composite monarchy stretching to Portugal and the Low Countries, and a brief English crown through Mary. The Civ7 essay stops with Isabella. This page starts from Hispania and uses Philip as the early modern king the game is commonly built around, without pretending a store page quoted him.1 2
A closer look
The update note changes how a culture bomb converts a foreign city to the religion of the Polish-Lithuanian arrangement, and it sits near the Spain heading in the same balance pass. Proximity in a patch list is not a shared civilization. Poland remains its own scenario pack on the English hub. Spain’s unit line about conquistadors is the sentence that belongs to this entry.3 4
In Civilization VI
The pack stays unconfirmed. The published Civilization VII Spain essay is the earlier queen. Keep Phoenician and Roman Hispania, Isabella’s reign, and Philip’s dates from 1556 to 1598 apart.1 2 3
